The Spiegel Affair (2013)

Preview

While the world teetered on the brink of a third world war fought with nuclear weapons during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, two charismatic power-seekers in Germany, Franz Josef Strauss and Rudolf Augstein, were carrying out a bitter feud: Strauss argued that a policy of Mutually Assured Destruction would eliminate war as an option, while Augstein believed that an arms race would inevitably lead to the next global catastrophe. Two fundamentally different political views of the world sharing the same ultimate goal — an end to all wars — faced off in the Spiegel Affair. Two political alpha males went at each other, taking no prisoners in the battles over the future of democracy, morality and ethics in politics, and the role of the press as a “fourth estate”. The resolution of the Spiegel Affair would mark the end of the Adenauer era and would be celebrated as a victory for freedom of the press and Germany’s young democracy over outdated hierarchies of power.
